Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January. Typically known for it's red hue, Garnett actually comes in a variety of different colours. These gemstones come from a very complex family and found all around the world. The origins of the word have its root from the latin word granatum which is defined as "seed". So Garnet was coined because of it's resemblance to the red seeds of a pomegranate.

The birthstone for February is Amethyst. Amethyst is a lilac (purple) variety of quartz. The violet colour originates from the impurities of iron within the gemstone. The spectrum of colour for Amethyst ranges from light purple to deep purple. The March birthstone is Aquamarine. As you can probably tell from it's name has origins in the sea. Named after the color of seawater Aquamarine comes from the latin words Aqua (water) and Marine (of the sea). The color of Aquamarine ranges from pale blue to light green. Historically Aquamarine has been viewed as the stone of youth and happiness to its bright and vibrant colors.

Diamonds! The birthstone for April is the most comonly known gemstone. The most popular for good reason as they are also one of the oldest with some natural diamonds ranging from 1 billion to 3.5 billion years old. The symbol of romance and love, Diamonds will always have a special place in many people's hearts. Derived from the ancient greek word adámas which means "proper, unalterable, unbreakable, untamed".

The May birthstone is the extraodinarily bright green Emerald. Some associate Emerald with intelligence and focus. Emerald come from the ancient greek word smaragdus which in itself just means Emerald. Did you know that Queen Cleopatra of Ancient Egypt had a fascination for Emeralds due to their rich soothing colour.

The birthstone for the month of June are Pearls. These absolutely gorgeous gems are rarely found in nature any more and the ones you probably see today are cultivated or cultured but that does not reduce their beauty in any way. The word Pearl originates from Middle English pere or Old French perle. Pearls can be spotted a mile away with their white color.

The July birthstone is Ruby. Known as the stone as strength and stamina to help ancient warriors in battle, Ruby's are a one of a kind gemstone. Ruby's are one of the strongest gemstones with only Diamonds and Moissanite being harder on a Mohs scale. The word Ruby originates from the Latin word Rubeus which means the color red.

The birthstone for the month of August is Peridot. A stone of ancient times and thought to protect the wearer from night terrors and evil spirits. Peridot is known for being a yellow or greenish mix of colors. Peridot originates from the Medival English word peridotus.

The fiery blue colour of Sapphire which is the birthstone of September has captured the attentions millions for millenia.Considered to be a protective stone Sapphires were thought to shield the wearer from physical harm and envy. Sapphire is derived from the Old French word saphir.

The birthstone for October is Opal. One of the most delicate gemstones for good reason as these gemstones can vary massively with their unique style of patterns and configuration. Opals are also special because they possess the ability the display dazzling flashes of light as the stone is turned in different directions. Opal is thought to be derived from the Sanskrit word upala.

The birthstone for November is Citrine. Known predominantly as the stone of healing and happiness this shiny yellow stone has only recently come to the forefront. Citrine can also come in shades of orange and brown. Citrine is derived from the French word citrin which means lemon-colored, yellow or greenish yellow.

The last and possibly the best birthstone is Blue Topaz for the month of December. Topaz has throughout ancient times been known as the stone of wealth. One of the lab curated gemstones through the process of heat and radiation gives this gemstone its vibrant blueish hue. Topaz is derived from the Old French word topace.
